About New Mexico

The UNM Department of Civil Engineering provides students a high-quality learning experience while helping to meet the engineering and construction needs of New Mexico, the nation and the world. The department is focused on producing innovative research, new knowledge, and excellent engineers and construction managers who will become leaders in their professions in the area of sustainable infrastructure, including green building, intelligent transportation systems, industrial ecology, aquifer management, and smart structures.

Civil engineering has research programs in construction, environmental, geotechnical, structural, transportation, and water resources engineering. Many interdisciplinary opportunities exist, as our faculty collaborate with those from departments across the University including biology and earth and planetary sciences. We direct courses that incorporate critical thinking, teamwork, communication skills, and engineering fundamentals through a combination of laboratory experience, practical field work, and classroom instruction.

Nearby are Sandia National Laboratories, Kirtland Air Force Base, the Santa Fe Institute, Intel Corporation, and Los Alamos National Laboratory. All offer research opportunities for civil engineering students.

The department offers academic programs leading to:

Master of science and doctor of philosophy degrees with emphases in any of our research areas.

The master of engineering degree requires no thesis and is geared toward professional practice.

Master of construction management requires a project and is geared toward professional practice. (No engineering degree required for admittance.)
