UNM Engineering offers academic programs engineering, computer science and interdisciplinary fields.
Biomedical engineers help design and develop tools to improve health – ranging from low-cost medical diagnostics for the third-world, to state-of-the-art flow cytometry. In UNM's Biomedical Engineering Program, students learn the technologies and develop the skills to help solve problems that challenge our biomedical world.
Chemical engineers are on the forefront of rapidly developing areas that include biotechnology and biomedicine, semiconductor manufacturing and data storage devices, and advanced materials with precisely-controlled microstructures. The UNM Department of Chemical and Nuclear Engineering engages students in cutting-edge research and making lasting social contributions.
Civil engineers plan, design and develop communities, roads, bridges, buildings, and transit systems while solving problems associated with water resources, energy, and pollution. The UNM Department of Civil Engineering focus is on sustainability and sustainable infrastructure.
Computer engineers develop software, hardware, and integrated computing systems. As a UNM computer engineering student, you will learn how software interacts with hardware and how to build the machines and the software to process large Internet and medical datasets.

Construction engineering is a blend of engineering, construction, and construction management. If you want to work in the construction industry and enjoy the status of a professional engineer, this program is for you. It is similar to the construction management program, but has more emphasis on engineering and technical courses.
Construction management combines engineering technology, construction techniques, and management skills. The UNM Construction Management program prepares students for the art of achieving maximum profit by efficient use of people, machines, materials and money to complete a construction project on time and to the satisfaction of the owner.
Electrical engineers work with the systems that power our world and design the devices that process our vast stores of data. As a UNM electrical engineering student, you can work on robots, nanotechnology, optoelectronics, pulsed power, fusion science, and more.
Interdisciplinary Film and Digital Media
Interdisciplinary Film and Digital Media program is an interdisciplinary program that gives students the critical, creative, and technical skills to be successful in careers involving digital technologies and innovative production techniques. It is a collaboration between the Anderson School of Management, Arts and Sciences, the College of Fine Arts, the School of Engineering, and other schools and colleges.
The Manufacturing Engineering Program is a multidisclpilary, master’s-devel academic program that prepares students for real-world manufacturing and management. The program covers modern manufacturing methods, integrating theory with manufacturing practice. A dual degree with Anderson School of Management Dual degree: Master of Engineering/Master of Business Administration.
Mechanical engineers design and develop many of the products, systems and technologies that move everyday life. A mechanical engineering degree from UNM gives you comprehensive knowledge and a broad set of engineering skills - from machines and tooling to computer-aided design - that will take you anywhere you want to go.
Nanoscience and Microsystems
The Nanoscience and Microsystems program is a joint degree program with the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering. The program evolved from the traditional disciplines of solid-state physics, chemistry, biology, materials science, and engineering. More than 70 faculty in nine academic departments helped develop the program.
Nuclear engineers are on the forefront of rapidly developing areas that include better, safer ways to power our planet. They’re working on reactor system designs, nuclear non-proliferation, radiation interaction with materials, and reducing and controlling radioactive waste.
Optical Science and Engineering
Those in optical science study such topics as the quantum theory of lasers to ultrashort pulse physics. Students in the department have a variety of research facilities to at their disposal, including the Center for High-Technology Materials and frequently collaborate with the three New Mexico national labs: Sandia National Laboratories, Los Alamos National Laboratories, and the Air Force Research Laboratory. Optical Science and Engineering is a collaboration between the physics and astronomy department in the College of Arts and Sciences and the electrical and computer engineering department in the School of Engineering.
