Process Overview

Are you an incoming freshman into the School of Engineering — or would you like to be some day? Are you curious (and maybe even confused) about where to start? Well, you’ve come to the right place! Our Engineering Student Services staff is always ready to help you through the process of becoming an engineering student.

Here are some useful tips that will help you get started on your journey:

  • Apply to UNM. On your ACT, SAT or AP test, indicate you’re going to UNM so the UNM Registrar’s Office will receive your scores. Be sure to indicate your interest in Engineering or Computer Science on the UNM application.
  • You will be admitted directly into the School of Engineering if you meet SOE admission requirements so that you can begin working on your required courses for admission to your degree-granting department.
  • All SOE-interested students should apply for the general UNM Scholarships (Regent’s, Presidential and Scholar’s) before the fall deadline. See UNM Scholarship website for details. Looking for more scholarships? The School of Engineering has additional scholarships. For information about scholarships and other funding sources, please contact Elsa Castillo, Scholarships Program Manager, at (505) 277-5064 or visit the Engineering Student Services Office located in the Centennial Engineering Center, Room 2080.
  • Sign up for Lobo Orientation, a required 2-day seminar for all incoming freshmen, including transfer freshmen with 26 or fewer credits. The SOE will have a separate session where you will meet the SOE advisors and learn how to be a successful SOE student.
    • Before you attend Lobo Orientation, make sure you:

      • Create your NetID
      • Click through My Course Placement
      • If you haven’t taken an ACT exam or want to challenge your ACT math score, meet with one of our pre-major advisors to learn about the COMPASS computer based math placement exam at the UNM Testing Center. You can also test in reading and English or a foreign language.
  • Lobo Orientation — If you indicated engineering or computer science on your UNM application, during Lobo Orientation you’ll also need to meet with the undergraduate advisor in your department of choice. There, you will learn about degree programs and develop a plan for your educational goals.
