Summer Science Camp Brings Middle School Students to Campus

A team, calling themselves “The Cast­aways,” won a raft building competition at the Exxon Mobile Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp at UNM this week. The students are four of the 50 middle school students on a two week visit to learn about science and math in a university setting.  The students, from Arizona and New Mexico, are hosted by the UNM School of Engineering Student Services and the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) for the camp.

The theme of the camp this year is “Traditional Knowledge, Modern Challenges.”  The students are chosen to attend the camp based on teacher recommendations, and academic proficiency.  Exxon Mobile works with former NASA astronaut Bernard Harris to target students with a demonstrated interest in match and science and picks up the cost for the student’s stay. They live in the dorms and learn in engineering labs.

Faculty members from UNM and area school districts teach the students in classes that include natural science, engineering, mathematics and technology.  Their activities include classroom study, experiments, individual and team projects, weekly field excursions and guest speakers who talk to the students about a possible future in engineering.
