School of Engineering seeking internal applications for two new positions

The UNM School of Engineering is inviting internal applications for two new leadership positions created by Donna Riley, Jim and Ellen King Dean of Engineering and Computing. Both will report directly to the dean.

Both positions have a best consideration date of July 1 with an anticipated start date of August 1, 2023.

The Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs will be responsible for providing leadership, management and policy development consistent with the School’s vision, mission and strategic plan addressing the following areas:

  • Faculty recruitment, retention, development and success;
  • Development and implementation of effective faculty mentoring programs in the School and departments;
  • Equity in workloads, compensation and recognition;
  • Inclusive culture and climate;
  • Implementation of collective bargaining agreements in collaboration with Academic Affairs/Office for Academic Personnel;
  • Tenure and promotion policy and procedures;
  • Matters related to immigration, retirement and other faculty employment concerns as they arise.

The Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs is a 0.5 FTE position during the nine-month faculty contract, compensated via Special Administrative Component (SAC). Summer administrative responsibilities are additionally compensated via SAC up to 1.5 months. This appointment is expected to be for an initial period of three years and is subject to annual evaluation/feedback. This search is internal to the School of Engineering and is open to all faculty with the rank of full professor.

The second position is Special Assistant to the Dean for Educational Initiatives. The principal responsibilities for the Special Assistant to the Dean will be to manage strategic initiatives related to curricular and pedagogical innovations in the School, including:

  • Working with the dean to develop and implement initiatives related to classroom transformations that foster student learning, success, belonging, well-being and retention;
  • Enhancing existing and developing new opportunities for experiential learning, including undergraduate research, making and design, community-based learning and internships;
  • Fostering and facilitating interdisciplinary educational opportunities; and
  • Identifying and creating pathways for completion of Honors in Engineering, while leveraging Honors opportunities to improve student experiences School-wide.

The special assistant will report to the dean and will work closely with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. They will also collaborate with School of Engineering department chairs and faculty to achieve the School’s strategic priorities for education innovation. Appointment is expected to be for an initial period of one academic year beginning in August. This is anticipated to be a 33% FTE position, will receive a course release and will receive a SAC while in the position.

This search is internal to the School of Engineering and is open to all faculty with the rank of associate or full professor.
