$4,500 in prizes awarded at Engineering Expo IX

The ninth annual UNM School of Engineering Engineering Expo, an event to showcase senior design projects, was held May 3, with a total of $4,500 in prizes awarded to winning teams for poster and elevator pitch contests.
The poster competition was held in Stamm Commons and the in Centennial Engineering Center, and the elevator pitch was held in Regener Hall.
Jamie Gomez, a senior lecturer in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, organizes the annual event, along with staff from the Engineering Student Success Center.

The pitch competition winners were:
First place ($1,000 prize): “Development of a Hydrogen Cooled Multi-Pin Particle Bed Reactor,” by students Lauren Bailey, Courtney Mace and Alexandra Martinez.
Second place ($750 prize): “Conversion of DME from the Pyolysis of Sawdust,” by students Tristin Martinez, Francesca Chioda, Jenna Marek, Cynthia Guerra, Daniela Mendez and Abdulrahman Bahri.
Third place ($500 prize): “Process Development of Large-Scale Porous Carbon Support,” by students Dhruv Patel, Luke Lucero, Raphael Angeles Reyes, Tin Nguyen, Marelessis Palomino and Patrick Survis.

The poster competition winners were:
First place ($1,000 prize): “Dynamic Prosthetic Interface for Competitive Cycling,” by students Jacob Whisenhunt, Giovanni Cordova, Brandon Doehne, Melachi Sanchez and Emma White.
Second place ($750 prize): “Development of a Hydrogen Cooled Multi-Pin Particle Bed Reactor,” by students Lauren Bailey, Courtney Mace and Alexandra Martinez.
Third place ($500 prize): “Concentrated Solar Power Utilized for Dehydrogenation of Natural Gas to Mixed Olefins,” by student s Mikayla Romero, Benjamin Harvey, Carina Anastasio, Zeke Garcia, Alix Rule and Gracee O’Toole.
Judges for the pitch competition were Alonzo Vera, Andrea Gonzales, Andrea Schmidt, Arlen Biersgreen, Brady Key, Brandon Herrera, Debashis Satpathi, Genneysburgh Izquierdo Mejias, Glenn Lommasson, Harsh Kumar, Imelda Atencio, Jake Deuel, Jeffrey Cadier, Jesse Larence, Jim Sipos, Josh James, Joshua Dawson, Kara Komula, Mark Andrews, Mark Johnston, Michael Gonzales, Nathan Cournoyer, Rehan Mukadam, Ron Oakes, Rudy Garcia, Saif Ismail and Sydney Donohue Jobe.
As members of the School of Engineering Corporate Affiliate Program, Kansas City National Security Campus, Sandia National Laboratories and Los Alamos National Laboratory provided judges for the event. Additional information about the Corporate Affiliate Program can be found on the website.
