Meet the new School of Engineering faculty at two upcoming events on Aug. 30

The School of Engineering is welcoming eight new faculty during the 2024-25 year. Faculty and staff are invited to learn more about their research and backgrounds, as well as have time to network with them, during the fall semester faculty assembly, followed by a reception.
Faculty assembly will be held 2-3:30 p.m. Aug. 30 in the Media Lab in Centennial Engineering Center, Room 3001. New faculty will give brief overviews of their research and teaching backgrounds. The meeting will be hybrid on Zoom for those who can’t attend in person (passcode 305258).
Afterward, a reception open to all faculty and staff will be held from 3:30-4:30 p.m. in Stamm Commons in Centennial Engineering Center’s first floor.
The following faculty are joining the School:
Department Chemical and Biological Engineering
Olivia Lanier is joining the department as an assistant professor. She joins UNM from a postdoctoral position at the University of Texas at Austin in biomedical engineering.
John King is joining the department as an assistant professor. Previously, King was an assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry at Lehigh University.
Also, Nicholas Jaegers is joining as an assistant professor in January 2025. He comes to UNM from a postdoctoral scholar position at the University of California, Berkeley. He will not be attendance for the Aug. 30 events.
Gerald May Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering
Claudia Garrido Martins is joining the department as a lecturer III. Most recently, she was an assistant professor in the Department of Engineering Technology and Construction Management at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
Carlos Rivera-González joins UNM as an assistant professor. Previously, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Toronto.
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering
Siamak Tavakoli, previously as assistant professor a Maharishi International University, is joining the department as a lecturer III.
Department of Mechanical Engineering
Chi Wang, an assistant professor, is joining UNM from a postdoctoral position at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
Department of Nuclear Engineering
Carl Willis, who has been a lecturer II and senior reactor operator in the department, is starting as a professor of practice.
In addition to the faculty who are joining this academic year, two faculty members who joined the School in January 2024 will also give presentations: Georgios Koutsakis, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering, and Allyson McGaughey, assistant professor in the Gerald May Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering.
