Engineering Expo II will feature senior students
April 20, 2016 - By Kim Delker
The University of New Mexico School of Engineering is hosting its second annual senior design expo on May 13, featuring projects from more than 200 students from all departments in the school.
Engineering Expo II will be held 2-5 p.m. on the first floor of Centennial Engineering Center. Free food will be served, and free parking is available for participants in the B lot on the northwest corner of Central and University.
Students, parents, faculty, staff, prospective students, and corporate sponsors are invited to attend.
Jamie Gomez, a lecturer in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, is organizing the event. Although all students in the school are requested to complete a capstone project their senior year, she sees this event as more than a requirement.
“Engineering Expo II is a great way for students to broaden their skills in presentation, networking, and in explaining their research to different types of people, including potential employees, their peers, faculty members, as well as with participants such as parents or community members who might not have backgrounds in engineering,” Gomez said.
In addition, the expo provides employers a perfect opportunity to meet graduating students who may be a match for positions in their companies.
Last year’s event featured projects ranging from posters to hands-on projects like Rube Goldberg machines and miniature fuel-cell cars.
This year, in addition to the students’ displays and demos, Engineering Expo II will feature a poster session, an elevator pitch competition and an edible car presentation. A brief awards ceremony will be held at the end of the event.
Those interested in becoming a sponsor or donating to the event can contact Kara Clem, director of development for the School of Engineering, at kara.clem@unmfund.org or (505) 277-2051.
