Tapia elected to Computing Research Association Board of Directors

Lydia Tapia, chair and professor in the Department of Computer Science at The University of New Mexico, has been elected to the Computing Research Association (CRA) Board of Directors.

Tapia was among five new members elected for the term that runs from July 1, 2023, to June 30, 2026. The election was held at the winter 2023 CRA Board of Directors meeting.

Tapia joined UNM in 2011. Her research is focused on the development of computationally efficient algorithms for the simulation and analysis of high-dimensional motions for robots and molecules. Specifically, she explores problems in computational structural biology, motion under stochastic uncertainty, and reinforcement learning.

In 2016, she received the National Science Foundation CAREER Award for “Modeling and Analyzing High-Dimensional Molecular Assembly: Quantifying the Impact of Allergen Structure.” She received the Denise Denton Emerging Leader ABIE Award from the Anita Borg Grace Hopper Celebration in 2015. In 2017, she selected for the Computing Research Association-Women (CRA-W) Borg Early Career Award, which honors Anita Borg, a pioneer for women in the field of computing. She is particularly proud of this award, which recognizes women in computing who have made significant research contributions to the field and in the outreach to women. And this month, she is being honored with a Women in Technology Award from the New Mexico Technology Council, which recognizes outstanding women in New Mexico’s STEM fields for their industry and community contributions.
