May 7, 2023 - by Kim Delker
On April 23, the UNM Formula SAE team held a driving day for sponsors, which allowed them take one of the past cars the team has taken to competition out for a spin around the G Lot practice track.
Dean Donna Riley is ready to race.
Donna Riley, the new Jim and Ellen King Dean of Engineering and Computing, had a chance to drive, as did her partner, Dave Stein.
Other supporters who participated were Doug Wood, Doug Campbell, John Willamson, Edward Quintana, Cathy Newby, Mark Rosenthal, Anthony Lobato, Mike Dexter, David and Steve Yao, Andy Spurgeon, Greg Portman, Michael Alexander and Jude Montoya.
Doug Wood (whose family funded the Dana C. Wood FSAE Racing Lab and Garage) on the track.
The FSAE team will head to international competition next month in Brooklyn, Mich. Though driving day featured internal combustion cars, the team is now competing exclusively with electric cars. John Russell, professor and director of the FSAE program at UNM, said that as the team builds more EVs for the annual competition, the plan is to replace in internal combustion cars with EVs for future driving days.
