UNM faculty chair international nuclear conference on Mathematics and Computational Methods

Three faculty members from The University of New Mexico Department of Nuclear Engineering are organizing an international conference on nuclear engineering modeling to be held in Denver from April 27 to May 1.

Christopher Perfetti, associate professor of nuclear engineering, is the general chair of the American Nuclear Society International Conference on Mathematics and Computational Methods Applied to Nuclear Science and Engineering (M&C 2025). Department of Nuclear Engineering faculty members Forrest Brown, national laboratory professor, and Anil Prinja, distinguished professor emeritus, are honorary chairs of M&C 2025.
The conference is held every two years through the American Nuclear Society as part of a topical series focused on bringing together global expertise on nuclear science and technology. This year’s conference topics include computational methods, high-performance computing, and nuclear reactor design and simulation. The organizers expect to host more than 300 attendees from U.S. universities, national laboratories and international organizations.
Computational methods give nuclear engineers the ability to predict the behavior of nuclear systems, such as how radiation interacts with matter, where energy is generated in a nuclear reactor, and how reactors respond to accident conditions.
“Predicting the behavior of nuclear reactors is very challenging because nuclear experiments are very, very expensive. Because you have to be more selective with your experimental measurements, our industry has therefore shifted toward modeling simulation in lieu of performing experimental measurements,” Perfetti said.
Developments in the industry have made modeling a hot topic in nuclear science.
“New reactor designs are forcing the nuclear industry to develop innovative modeling and simulation tools. It is an exciting time to work on computational methods,” he said. Learn more about the conference on the ANS M&C 2025 Conference website.
