Engineering Expo celebrates 10 years
May 13, 2025 - By Carly Bowling
Students in the School of Engineering gathered last Friday to present their senior design projects during the tenth annual Engineering Expo. The Expo offers students a chance to win monetary prizes through poster presentations and pitch competitions and this year’s event was particularly competitive with two teams tying for first and several teams earning honorable mention.
The poster competition was held in Stamm Commons and the in Centennial Engineering Center, and the pitch competition was held in Regener Hall.
Jamie Gomez, a senior lecturer in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, organizes the annual event, along with Yadeeh Sawyer, first and second year experience manager, and other staff from the Engineering Student Success Center.
The pitch competition winners were:
Tied for first place (teams will split $1750): “Pipe Freeze Prevention Team (Design V Capstone Project),” by students Alex Atcitty, Ethan Brouw, Jose Castro, Lukas Gannon, Julio Guzman-Vega, William Mitchell, and Alvaro Morales Sotelo and ”Design of Magnetically-Driven Sealless Flow Battery Pump for GridFlow Startup,” by students Grace Dean, Jamieson Deuel, Joseph Ferreri, Madeline Hwang and Max Starceski.
Third place ($500): “Zuni-Penn Stormwater Detention Pond,” by student Jaimie Ritchie.
Honorable mention: “Design and Construction of a Low-Cost Dust Tunnel,” by student Heidi Menges. “From nothing to something: Efficient Iridium Recovery from Industrial Waste,” by students Mia Baca, Ngoc Doan, Paige Eizaguirre, Veronica Gayoso, Quyen Le, and Nathan Sorenson. ”Solar-Powered Conversion of Natural Gas from Carlsbad Oil Refineries for Catalytic Upcycling of Olefins into Transportation Fuels,” by students David Chyo, Caleb Dang, John Fawcett, Kadie Sanchez, and Arianna Serrano.
