UNM hosts NSF Day on August 29
August 14, 2018 - By Vanessa Tan
The University of New Mexico is partnering with the National Science Foundation New Mexico’s Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research to host a day dedicated to research funding opportunities.
The National Science Foundation (NSF), UNM and New Mexico's Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (NM EPSCoR), host NSF Day New Mexico Wednesday, Aug. 29 from 7:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the UNM Student Union Building. Faculty and postdoctoral researchers from across the southwest and western regions of the U.S. will have the opportunity to meet with NSF representatives to learn more about competing for NSF funding for science, engineering and education research.
The NSF budgets more than $7 billion per year to fund discovery, learning, innovation and research infrastructure to boost U.S. leadership in all aspects of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) research and education.
Every year, research teams from the nation’s colleges and universities submit more than 50,000 proposals to the agency for a chance to get their research funded, and NSF funds about 12,000 awards. Through a competitive merit review process, only the strongest proposals are funded. NSF realizes this challenge and has created NSF Days to provide information, contacts and tips to help researchers be more successful in obtaining NSF funding.
Throughout the day, NSF representatives will lead sessions geared towards proposal writing, the NSF’s merit review process and programs that fall within NSF's scientific, engineering and education directorates, as well as funding opportunities that cross disciplinary boundaries. In addition, researchers will have time to discuss informally their science and education research interests with fellow attendees.
NSF Director France A. Córdova is slated to speak at this event.
