Engineering in Action series to feature run of nuclear reactor February 26
February 4, 2021 - by Kim Delker
“Engineering in Action: How Our Innovation is Impacting Our Community,” a periodic virtual series presented by The University of New Mexico School of Engineering, will feature a demonstration of the university’s nuclear reactor at the February 26 event.
“Five Watts and Made of Plastic: The Unique Capabilities of the Smallest Nuclear Reactor in the Country,” will be at 3 p.m. on Zoom. The presenter is Carl Willis, an instructor in the Department of Nuclear Engineering and operator of the UNM nuclear reactor.
UNM’s nuclear reactor, the AGN-201M, has been on campus since 1966. Only about 30 university-owned reactors exist. In 2019, the Department of Nuclear Engineering celebrated the 50th anniversary of the reactor going “critical.”
