April 3, 2024 - by Kim Delker
Mark Gilmore, chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Fernando Moreu, associate professor in the Gerald May Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering, talk at lunch with a couple of prospective students about graduate studies opportunities in the School.
About 25 students with aspirations of attending graduate school — possibly in the School of Engineering — visited campus last week for a few days of information, tours and networking.
Students came from near (some are current UNM students or attending another New Mexico university) and far (with students from Seattle, Texas, Las Vegas, Utah, Florida, Indiana and even Puerto Rico.
The activities began on Thursday, March 28, with a welcome dinner at Centennial Engineering Center. On Friday, prospective students attended information sessions from various groups around campus, including the Graduate Support Center, UNM Housing and Graduate Studies, in addition to presentations about School of Engineering financial resources with Engineering Student Success Center Director Elsa Castillo and School of Engineering research with Steven Graves, associate dean of research and innovation.
Charles Fleddermann, senior associate dean for academics and community engagement, along with several faculty, attended lunch on Friday with students. Students also had time to go on campus and department tours during their stay. Interested students were invited to a closing dinner at Albuquerque’s Old Town on Friday evening.
The annual graduate student recruitment event is organized by Engineering Student Success Center, with funding provided by the UNM Office of Graduate Studies and the School of Engineering Office of the Dean.
