Prospective Students
A Unique Environment
At The University of New Mexico, our student-focused philosophy, world-class faculty, and exceptional student-faculty interaction will give you the opportunity to pursue and achieve your goals. UNM Engineering offers you a unique environment to learn, opportunities to conduct research and practice within industry – all unmatched in the state of New Mexico and hard to find in the rest of the country.
Chemical and Biological Engineering
Chemical engineers are on the forefront of rapidly-developing areas such as biotechnology and biomedicine; semiconductor manufacturing and data-storage devices; and advanced materials with precisely-controlled microstructures. Learn about exciting areas such as catalysis, biotechnology, chemical vapor deposition, and plasma etching.
Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering
This area focuses on everything from making homes and bridges stronger to ensuring traffic flow and even discovering ways to make sure the water we drink is clean and plentiful. Choose among undergraduate degrees in civil engineering, construction engineering or construction management engineering.
Computer Science
This cutting-edge field is in demand to solve the challenges of our modern world. Learn about high-performance computing, game theory and collaborative computing, computational medicine, DNA computing, biologically-inspired computation, formal methods and automated reasoning and privacy, security and computational immunology.
Electrical and Computer Engineering
The department offers undergraduate programs in both electrical engineering and computer engineering, in addition to a shared-credit option that allows students to complete a bachelor’s and master’s degree in five years, and a dual-degree program where students can earn both an engineering degree and a degree from Anderson School of Management.
Nuclear Engineering
As one of the only nuclear engineering programs in the Southwest, students gain knowledge and practical experience in nuclear measurements, fission physics and power systems, preparing them for exciting careers with partners such as national laboratories and the Air Force Research Laboratory.
Optical Science and Engineering
One of the oldest and most successful science and engineering interdisciplinary programs worldwide, the Optical Science and Engineering (OSE) program is affiliated with separate departments in multiple schools/colleges, including Physics & Astronomy, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical and Biological Engineering, and Applied Mathematics.
Nanoscience & Microsystems Engineering
Demand for graduates in nanotechnology has been increasing steadily, but currently, only a few universities offer degree programs. UNM's interdisciplinary Nanoscience and Microsystems Engineering degree program is offered jointly by the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering, evolving from the traditional disciplines of solid state physics, chemistry, biology, materials science and engineering.
Biomedical Engineering
Established in 2010, the Biomedical Engineering (BME) program at UNM grants both MS and PhD degrees. Reflecting the BME program's interdisciplinary nature, the home departments of the faculty participating in our BME graduate program span our School of Engineering, the School of Medicine, and the College of Arts and Sciences.
