Professor Yu-Lin Shen is Author of New Book on Materials Modeling
September 2, 2010
Interim Chair and Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at UNM, Yu-Lin Shen has written a book that gives an in-depth look at the mechanical analysis and modeling of advanced small-scale structures and heterogeneous material systems. The book, “Constrained Deformation of Materials,” is subtitled “Devices, Heterogeneous Structures and Thermo-Mechanical Modeling.”
Shen says he wanted to make this book a guide for students, researchers and engineers to apply simple tools to analyze and solve engineering problems. In particular the book examines electronic device and packaging structures, thin films, composites and multi-component systems in which mechanical deformation takes place in a highly constrained manner. He says the book brings out the commonality of these diverse topics and threads them together under a unified theme.
Shen completed the book while on sabbatical from UNM last year. His main area of research is mechanical behavior of materials, especially in modeling. His numerical modeling experience spans disparate length scales from the continuum-level down to atomistics.
He has published about 140 research papers, 95 of which are journal articles with a total citation record over 1,400. In 2005 Shen was elected Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). He received his Ph.D. in engineering from Brown University in 1994 and was a post-doctoral research associate at Massachusetts Institute of Technology before joining the faculty of UNM in 1996.
