New Biomedical Engineering Ph.D. Offered in Fall 2011

A new biomedical engineering concentration in the Ph.D. in engineering degree program will be offered by the University of New Mexico School of Engineering starting Fall 2011. UNM is also seeking permission from the State of New Mexico to offer a Master’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering.
Together, the M.S. and Ph.D. programs will form a complete graduate program in biomedical engineering, the only such program in New Mexico. The programs will prepare students for positions in academia and in laboratories across the nation and worldwide, as well as in the large number of biotech companies in New Mexico.
“With the intersection of our outstanding School of Engineering, the national labs, and our excellent medical school, there’s a unique opportunity for UNM to train students to work in the biotech industry,” says Steven Graves, director of the biomedical engineering graduate programs. “The new biomedical engineering program will help inspire the development of a biomedical engineering research hub that will do a lot for the local economy.”
Biomedical engineering blends engineering principles and tools with the biological sciences and medicine to enhance health care and improve the quality of life. Prosthetics, blood alcohol detectors, biosensors, and engineered proteins have all been developed by biomedical engineers. Graduates of the Biomedical Engineering program will have no shortage of job opportunities, as the demand for biomedical engineers is expected to increase 21% over the next decade.
