February 3, 2015 - By Kim Delker
For the second year in a row, the University of New Mexico School of Engineering is sponsoring the Run Nerds Run! 5K race to raise funds for student scholarships. This year's race will be 8-9 a.m. Saturday, April 4 on the UNM campus.
Registration for the races, as well as for those interested in volunteering, is now open at https://runsignup.com/Race/NM/Albuquerque/RunNerdsRun5k1k
The price is $25 per runner until March 6, with discounts offered for group registrations. Runners get a free T-shirt and a race pack with gifts donated from sponsors. Details can be found on the registration website.
The 5K will begin and end at the Centennial Engineering Center, winding though campus on the following route: http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/520293134#.
Run participants will be encouraged to "dress like a nerd," and prizes will be awarded for first, second, and third place; fastest male runner; fastest female runner; coolest nerd outfit; most money raised as an individual; and most money raised as a team.
This year also marks the addition of a 1K race, created especially for kids, and will include an egg hunt and science demonstrations by student organizations. That race will be held from 10-10:15 a.m. The price is $15 before March 6.
The goal of the run is to raise funds for the Visionaries of Infinite Potential scholarship endowment in the School of Engineering. The fund-raising goal for the race is $16,000. Those interested in donating can give online at https://www.unmfund.org/fund/visionaries-of-infinite-potential-vip-endowment/ Sponsors are also sought for the race.
Those interested in becoming a sponsor or who have general questions about the event can call 505-289-1008 or email runnerdsrun5k@gmail.com
