Engineering faculty named Outstanding Teacher of the Year, Lecturer of the Year

Two faculty members from the School of Engineering are being honored by The University of New Mexico for their outstanding teaching efforts.
Heather Canavan, associate professor of chemical and biological engineering, was named a 2017-18 Outstanding Teacher of the Year, and Asal Naseri, senior lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, was selected as a 2017-18 Lecturer of the Year.
They are being honored at the 2017-18 Teaching Awards Ceremony 2-4 p.m. May 3 in SUB Ballroom C.
Sponsored by the Faculty Senate Teaching Enhancement Committee and the Center for Teaching Excellence, the Teaching Awards recognize UNM’s outstanding educators. Each year, the Faculty Senate Teaching Enhancement Committee selects recipients for a variety of campus-wide teaching awards. Awardees are selected following a nomination and a review process.
The Outstanding Teacher of the Year is open to all tenured faculty, clinician educators, and professors of practice are eligible. The Teacher of the Year Award recognizes and rewards teaching excellence and fosters a campus climate that supports teaching improvement and accomplishment. Multiple recipients may be selected for this monetary award. Nominations can be made by colleagues, students, or alumni.
The Lecturer of the Year Award is open to all non-tenure track faculty who have taught at least four sections per year (including summer sessions) during a minimum of three consecutive years at UNM are eligible for this award. This award recognizes the contributions to UNM’s teaching mission by consistently employed, nontenure-track faculty. Multiple recipients may be selected for this monetary award. Nominations can be made by colleagues, students, or alumni.
