September 24, 2019 - By Kim Delker
The University of New Mexico’s student section of the American Nuclear Society recently organized a Girl Scout event where UNM student volunteers educated girls on nuclear technology and the careers in the field in hopes of attracting more women into STEM disciplines.
The students handed out about 150 “Get to Know Nuclear” badges to Girl Scouts from all around New Mexico at the event on Sept. 7.
The UNM students who participated in the event were Rowdy Davis, Matthew Gervasi, Emily Carillo, Dylan Weatherred, Yuqi Liu, Max Dimsha, Erik Boldt, Steven Showalter, Ashley Machado, Tyler Schuyler, Tara Robertson, Stephanie Gammill, Bobbi Merryman, Elijah Soto, Greg Ryba, Benjamin Houldridge, James Pike, Rashelle Brownlee, Shane Evans, Justin Hamil, Ethan Krammer, Christopher Wolfe, Mingfu He, Mekiel Olguin, Lauren Crabtree, and Alexandria Ragsdale.
NE student Gemma Strong and NE lecturer Carl Willis organized all the activities for the event.
Earlier this year, the UNM’s student ANS chapter received the Samuel Glasstone Award for best student section in the country. Christopher Perfetti, assistant professor of nuclear engineering, is faculty advisor for the group.
