NSF official to give talk to UNM on November 20

Dawn Tilbury, assistant director of the Engineering Directorate at the National Science Foundation, will speak to faculty of The University of New Mexico, as well as invited guests of the national labs and industry on November 20.
She will speak on “Engineering at NSF: Big Ideas, Industries of the Future, and Convergence.” The talk will be at 11 a.m. on Zoom. Registration is open at https://goto.unm.edu/tilbury
She will be introduced by UNM Provost James Holloway and Rafael Fierro, professor of electrical and computer engineering, will host the seminar. A question-and-answer session will follow her presentation.
Tilbury leads NSF’s Directorate for Engineering in its mission to support engineering research and education critical to the nation’s future and foster innovations to benefit society. The Engineering Directorate provides about 32 percent of the federal funding for fundamental research in engineering at academic institutions and distributes about 1,600 research awards each year. The Engineering Directorate also helps to advance NSF’s Ten Big Ideas, including the Future of Work at the Human-Technology Frontier, the Quantum Leap, and NSF INCLUDES.
In addition to her role at NSF, Tilbury is a professor in both mechanical and electrical engineering at University of Michigan. Her background is in systems and control engineering. She is the inaugural chair of the Robotics Steering Committee and served as an associate dean for research in the College of Engineering.
