2022’s Top 10 research articles from the School of Engineering
January 10, 2023 - by Kim Delker
Research is a major part of the UNM School of Engineering (our research expenditures for fiscal year 2022 were over $39 million), and although the School isn’t able to highlight all of its research, it’s a priority to feature as much as possible.
In an effort to showcase some of the research, Edl Schamiloglu, associate dean for research and innovation in the School of Engineering, compiled an inaugural annual list of research highlights from the School in 2022.
“The 2022 list includes faculty, students and alums, an inspiring group of engineers that showcase our School's accomplishments! I hope you are as proud of this list as I am,” he said.
Top 10 research stories in chronological order:
- Engineering alumna author on paper on achieving a burning plasma state. Schamiloglu notes that should be noted that Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory announced achieving ignition in December 2022, and Kelly Hahn is the scientist responsible for the zirconium activation diagnostics (Well NADs) used to report the yield of record for this and other DT (deuterium/tritium) experiments.
- Electrical engineering professor receives NSF CAREER Award for project
- Pocket-sized antenna spurs a successful STEM outreach effort at COSMIAC
- Nuclear engineering faculty awarded part of $61 million in funding from Department of Energy
- Turing Award winner, alumnus to give talk at UNM on Oct. 10
- Janicek receives directed energy research grant award. Janicek was the School of Engineering Breece Award co-recipient in May 2022 for achieving the highest GPA in the the School over the last two years of her bachelor’s degree, Schamiloglu notes.
- UNM becomes a U.S. Space Command Academic Engagement Enterprise member
- Wei receives UNM Rainforest Innovations funding for battery device
- Engineering professor leading one of five NSF BRITE Fellow projects
- Engineering professor receives 2023 AFOSR Young Investigator Award
