National Science Foundation engineering leader to visit School of Engineering on Jan. 25
January 18, 2024 - by Kim Delker
Susan Margulies, an assistant director who leads the U.S. National Science Foundation’s Directorate for Engineering, will be visiting the School of Engineering on Jan. 25, engaging with faculty from around the School and the university on various topics.
Margulies oversees the Engineering Directorate at NSF, which has a yearly budget of nearly $800 million and provides over 40 percent of federal funding for fundamental research in engineering at academic institutions. It distributes more than 1,500 awards supporting research and education each year.
Margulies will first meet with leadership from the School of Engineering at a breakfast, then will participate in a discussion about EPSCoR with School leadership.
At 9:45 a.m., a discussion about large research center opportunities will be held with professors from a variety of disciplines in the School. At 10:30 a.m., Margulies will participate in a tour for the Center for Water and the Environment, an NSF CREST center. Afterward, there will be a discussion about opportunities for School of Engineering and Health Sciences Center collaboration with School and university leadership.
She will present at a faculty town hall from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. in Centennial Engineering Center’s Stamm Commons. A light lunch will be provided, and the meeting is open to faculty and staff.
After lunch, there will be a dedicated time for her to meet with leaders from other New Mexico higher education institutions — New Mexico State University, Navajo Technical University and New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology.
For questions about the visit or inquiries about attending sessions other than the faculty town hall, contact Steven Graves, associate dean for research and innovation, at graves@unm.edu.
